It was incorporated as a city in 1893, but its history dates back to the 18th century. Laconia was originally inhabited by the Pennacook Native American tribe. The first European settlement in the area was established in 1761 by a group of colonists from Massachusetts led by Captain Josiah Richardson. They named the settlement "Meredith Bridge" after the nearby Meredith town and the bridge that crossed the Winnipesaukee River. In the early 19th century, the town became known as "Laconia" after the ancient Greek region of Laconia. The name was chosen because the town was known for its bravery and courage, just like the people of Laconia in Greece. The town grew rapidly in the 19th century due to the construction of the Boston, Concord, and Montreal Railroad, which brought tourists and industry to the area. During the 20th century, Laconia continued to grow as a manufacturing center, with companies producing textiles, shoes, and electrical components. In the 1920s and 1930s, Laconia was a popular tourist destination, with visitors coming to enjoy the town's beaches and lakes. Today, Laconia is a thriving city with a population of around 16,000 people. It is home to many businesses, including healthcare, education, and manufacturing, and it remains a popular tourist destination due to its location on Lake Winnipesaukee and its many outdoor recreational opportunities.
