Hogansburg History
Hogansburg is a small hamlet located in the town of Bombay in Franklin County, New York, United States. The area is rich in history and has been home to various Native American tribes, French explorers, and English settlers.
The Mohawk Nation, one of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, originally inhabited the area. The Mohawk people were farmers, hunters, and traders, and they developed a thriving economy through their trading relationships with European settlers.
In the mid-1700s, French explorers arrived in the area and established a trading post near the present-day village of Hogansburg. The French traders established a strong relationship with the Mohawk people, and the trading post became an important center for commerce and diplomacy.
In 1763, during the French and Indian War, the British captured the area from the French, and the Mohawk people became allies of the British. The British established a fort near the trading post, which was later named Fort Covington.
After the American Revolution, the United States government signed a series of treaties with the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, including the Mohawk Nation, which ceded much of their land to the United States. The land that is now Hogansburg was granted to several individuals, including Colonel George White, who established a farm in the area. In the mid-19th century, the St. Regis Reservation was established, and much of the land around Hogansburg was designated as part of the reservation. Today, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe is one of the largest employers in the area and is a significant economic and cultural force in the region.
