History

Appalachian State University is a public university located in Boone, North Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1899 as Watauga Academy, a small institution dedicated to teacher training. Over the years, the academy expanded its curriculum and evolved into a junior college called Appalachian Training School in 1903. In 1925, it became a four-year institution and was renamed Appalachian State Teachers College.
