History & Context
Qualicum Beach History Qualicum Beach is a small town located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The area has a rich history dating back thousands of years. The First Nations people, specifically the Qualicum, Snaw-naw-as, and the Shelly bands, were the original inhabitants of the region. They lived off the land and sea, relying on hunting, fishing, and gathering wild foods for their survival. The first European explorer to visit the area was the Spanish navigator Francisco de Eliza in 1791. He named the bay "Puerto de San Francisco Javier." The area remained relatively untouched by European settlers until the late 1800s when the E & N Railway was built, connecting the region to Victoria and Nanaimo.
