History

The history of Assisi is inextricably linked to the life and mission of Saint Francis, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone in 1181 or 1182. His embrace of poverty and devotion to Christ transformed a small provincial town into a spiritual powerhouse during the Middle Ages. Prior to Saint Francis’s rise, Assisi was a thriving Roman colonia known as Asisium. Ruins of the Roman amphitheater and sections of the ancient Forum still peek through the walls, evidence of a once-sparkling jewel of the Roman Empire. By the 3rd century, the city had adopted Christianity, entwining its identity with early Christian traditions.
