History

Santa Catalina Island, located off the coast of Southern California, has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. One of the most fascinating stories of the island is that of the Avalon, a small town on the island's eastern end.

The history of Avalon dates back to the late 19th century when George Shatto purchased the island in 1887. Shatto envisioned the island as a resort destination and began developing it as such. One of his first orders of business was to build a hotel in Avalon, which he named the Hotel Metropole.

In the years that followed, Avalon became a popular destination for wealthy tourists from around the world. The town's stunning natural beauty, including its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, made it a favorite spot for swimming, boating, and fishing.

During this time, Avalon underwent a significant transformation as developers built a variety of amenities, including a dance pavilion, a theater, and an aquarium. The town's population grew as workers came to the island to staff the new attractions and serve the growing tourist industry.

In the early 20th century, Avalon became a hotspot for Hollywood celebrities, who were drawn to the island's tranquil beauty and glamorous lifestyle. Stars such as Charlie Chaplin, Errol Flynn, and Marilyn Monroe all spent time in Avalon, adding to the town's mystique and glamour.

Today, Avalon remains a popular destination for tourists and retains much of its historic charm. Visitors can still stroll along the waterfront, explore the town's quaint shops and restaurants, and take in the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The town is also home to several historic landmarks, including the Casino building, which was built in 1929 and served as a ballroom and movie theater.
