A small coastal town located in the canton of Puerto Lopez

History

Ayampe is a small coastal village located in the province of Manabí, Ecuador. While it is a relatively lesser-known destination, Ayampe holds a unique history and charm.

Historically, Ayampe was inhabited by the indigenous peoples of the region long before the arrival of the Spanish colonizers. The village was part of the Manteno civilization, which thrived in the area for centuries. The Manteno people were known for their advanced agricultural practices and skilled craftsmanship.

With the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, Ayampe and the surrounding region fell under Spanish rule. The area was predominantly used for agriculture, particularly for cultivating cacao, sugarcane, and other crops. During the colonial period, Ayampe was a part of the larger administrative unit known as the Royal Corregimiento of Puerto Viejo, which encompassed several towns and villages along the coast.
