Archaeological findings suggest that Thracian tribes lived in the region around the 5th century BCE. During the Roman Empire, the area was part of the province of Thrace. In the Middle Ages, the Byzantine Empire and the Bulgarian Empire exerted influence over the region. Ottoman Rule: With the fall of the Bulgarian Empire, the Ottoman Turks conquered the area in the 14th century.
