History & Context

History The Emerald Isle is a barrier island located on the southern Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches and recreational activities. While the island itself does not have an extensive history, the broader region of North Carolina has a rich and diverse historical background. The area where Emerald Isle is situated was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Algonquian-speaking people such as the Coree and Croatan tribes. European exploration of the region began in the 16th century when Spanish explorers, including Juan Pardo and Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón, ventured along the coast. However, permanent European settlement did not occur until the 17th century. In the 1600s, the English established several colonies in the region, including the Roanoke Colony on Roanoke Island, which is located near Emerald Isle. The Roanoke Colony is famous for its mysterious disappearance in 1587, known as the "Lost Colony."
