History

Canandaigua is a city located in Ontario County, New York, United States. It is situated in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, about 30 miles southeast of Rochester. The history of Canandaigua dates back to the early Native American tribes who inhabited the area.

Prior to European settlement, the region was home to the Seneca Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Seneca people referred to the area as "Canandaigua," which means "the chosen spot" or "the chosen place." The Seneca Nation played a significant role in the area's history and maintained a large village near the present-day city of Canandaigua.

European settlers arrived in the late 18th century, and in 1789, a treaty was signed between the United States government and the Iroquois Confederacy, including the Seneca Nation, known as the Pickering Treaty. This treaty opened up the region for settlement and led to the establishment of a number of towns, including Canandaigua.
