History Bryson City is a small town located in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. It is nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains and serves as the county seat. The history of Bryson City and Swain County is closely intertwined with the natural beauty of the region, Native American heritage, and the development of the railroad. Before European settlers arrived, the area was inhabited by the Cherokee people. The Cherokee had a significant presence in the region and had established a number of settlements, including one known as "Nikwasi" near present-day Bryson City. The Cherokee way of life was disrupted when European explorers and settlers arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries.
