History
Campo Imperatore, often referred to as the "Little Tibet" of Italy, is a high mountain plateau located in the Apennine Mountains, within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. Here is a brief overview of the history of Campo Imperatore:
Early History: The region has a long history of human presence dating back to prehistoric times. Various archaeological findings suggest that the area was inhabited by ancient peoples, including the Vestini and the Picentes.
Roman Period: The Romans also had a presence in the region, and the name "Campo Imperatore" itself translates to "Emperor's Field." According to tradition, the Roman Emperor Augustus used the plateau as a summer grazing ground for his sheep.
Medieval Period: In the medieval period, Campo Imperatore was part of the territories controlled by the Abbey of Santa Maria di Monte Cassino. The region played a strategic role in the Middle Ages due to its position along important trade routes.
