History

Cannon Mountain is one of the most iconic and historically significant peaks in the White Mountains. Rising to an elevation of 4,080 feet, Cannon Mountain is renowned for its rugged terrain, premier skiing, and deep-rooted history that dates back centuries. The region has been an essential part of New England’s geological, cultural, and recreational landscape, drawing explorers, naturalists, and adventurers for generations. Searches for “Cannon Mountain history” and “Franconia ski resorts” frequently uncover fascinating stories of its past.

Geologically, Cannon Mountain is part of the White Mountain range, primarily composed of Conway granite. The mountain has been shaped by glacial activity over millions of years, forming the distinct cliffs and rock faces that make it one of the most striking peaks in New Hampshire. Most notably, Cannon Mountain was once home to the famous Old Man of the Mountain, a series of granite ledges that, when viewed from a specific angle, formed a natural rock profile resembling a human face. This formation, discovered in the early 19th century, became a symbol of New Hampshire and attracted thousands of visitors annually before its collapse in 2003. People still frequently search for “Old Man of the Mountain history” and “what happened to the Old Man of the Mountain.”
