East Orleans History
East Orleans is a village located in the town of Orleans, in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States. The area was originally inhabited by the Nauset people, a Native American tribe. The Nauset tribe was one of the members of the Wampanoag Confederacy, which was an alliance of several tribes in southeastern Massachusetts.
The first European settlement in East Orleans was established in the mid-1600s, after the arrival of English settlers. The settlers were primarily farmers and fishermen, and they relied on the nearby ocean for their livelihoods. The village grew slowly over the years, and by the late 1800s, it had become a popular summer resort destination.
In the early 20th century, the village experienced a period of growth and development, as many wealthy families from Boston and other cities began building summer homes in the area. Many of these homes were large and ornate, and they remain a defining feature of the village to this day.
During World War II, East Orleans was home to a Naval Air Station, which was used to train pilots for carrier-based aircraft. The base was decommissioned after the war, and the land was eventually sold to private developers.
Today, East Orleans is a popular destination for tourists and vacationers, who come to enjoy its scenic beaches, quaint shops, and charming architecture. Despite its growth and development, the village has managed to maintain much of its historic character and small-town charm.
