History Chelan is a city located in Chelan County, Washington, and it is situated at the southeastern tip of Lake Chelan. The history of Chelan is closely tied to the development of the region, which was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, predominantly the Columbia Plateau tribes and the Wenatchi people. European exploration of the Chelan area began in the early 19th century when fur traders and explorers, including the Hudson's Bay Company, ventured into the Pacific Northwest. The first recorded European to visit the Lake Chelan area was a French-Canadian fur trader named Michel Laframboise, who arrived in 1811.
