Historic, award-winning marketplace is nestled in the heart of downtown Burlington

The Historical Evolution

Church Street is a bustling, pedestrian-only thoroughfare that serves as the heart of the city’s cultural, commercial, and social life. Its history dates back to the late 18th century when Burlington was first established as a settlement. The street’s name derives from the iconic Unitarian Church, formally known as the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington, which has stood at its northern terminus since 1816.

In its early years, Church Street was a hub of local commerce, serving the surrounding community of farmers, merchants, and tradespeople. The street’s proximity to Lake Champlain made it a critical artery for transporting goods and supplies, as the lake connected Burlington to larger markets in Canada and the United States. By the mid-19th century, the advent of the railroad enhanced the area’s connectivity, further solidifying Church Street as the commercial epicenter of Burlington.
