Tenby History

Tenby is a coastal town located in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It has a rich and diverse history dating back to the medieval times.

In the early 12th century, Tenby was a small fishing village that was part of the Welsh kingdom of Deheubarth. However, it quickly grew in importance due to its strategic location on the coast, and in 1153, it was granted a royal charter by King Henry II of England, making it one of the oldest chartered towns in Wales.

During the medieval period, Tenby became an important trading center, with ships from across Europe visiting its harbor to trade goods such as wool, timber, and fish. The town also played a key role in defending the coast against invaders, and in the 13th century, it was fortified with a stone wall and several towers.
