Clarksville History

Clarksville is a small town located in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The area was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Occaneechi and Saponi tribes, who lived along the Roanoke River and its tributaries.

In the mid-18th century, European settlers began to move into the area and establish farms and plantations. The town of Clarksville was founded in 1818, named in honor of its founder, Clarke Royster.

During the Civil War, the town of Clarksville was occupied by both Union and Confederate forces at various times. The town was also a hub for the tobacco trade, with several warehouses and processing facilities located in the area.
