History & Context
History Cane Garden Bay is a picturesque coastal area located on the northwestern coast of Tortola, which is the largest and most populated island in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). The history of Cane Garden Bay, like much of the BVI, is closely tied to the colonial era, the plantation system, and the development of the Caribbean as a major trade hub. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the BVI was under British control and primarily used as a base for the sugar and rum industries. The fertile lands of Tortola attracted European settlers who established plantations to cultivate sugarcane and produce rum. Cane Garden Bay was one such plantation, named after the thriving sugarcane fields that covered the area. The plantation system relied on enslaved labor, and Cane Garden Bay was no exception. Enslaved Africans were brought to Tortola to work on the sugarcane plantations under harsh conditions. The remnants of the old plantation infrastructure, such as stone walls and ruins, can still be found in the area today, serving as a reminder of this dark period in history.
