History

Crystal Mountain is a popular year-round resort located in Thompsonville, Michigan. Nestled amidst the picturesque landscape of the state's Lower Peninsula, Crystal Mountain has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century.

The story of Crystal Mountain begins in the 1920s when the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company purchased the property for its vast reserves of natural gas. The company drilled wells and extracted gas from the area for several decades. However, in the 1950s, as the natural gas supply dwindled, the company began to explore other uses for the land.

In the late 1950s, the idea of developing a ski resort on the property started to take shape. The Michigan Consolidated Gas Company recognized the potential of the hilly terrain and ample snowfall, and they began transforming the area into a ski destination. In 1956, the first ski tow was installed, and the resort officially opened as Crystal Mountain in 1958.

Over the years, Crystal Mountain expanded its offerings and amenities. Additional ski lifts were added, allowing skiers and snowboarders to access more slopes. The resort also developed a snowmaking system to ensure consistent snow coverage. As winter sports gained popularity, Crystal Mountain grew into a sought-after destination for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.

Beyond winter sports, Crystal Mountain recognized the opportunity to offer activities throughout the year. In the 1960s, the resort introduced an 18-hole golf course, making it one of Michigan's first ski and golf resorts. The championship-level golf course attracted golfers from near and far, further establishing Crystal Mountain as a premier recreational destination.

As Crystal Mountain evolved, it continued to expand and diversify its amenities. The resort added accommodations, including hotels, condominiums, and vacation rental homes, to cater to visitors' needs. Various restaurants, a spa, a fitness center, and an indoor waterpark were also built to provide a well-rounded resort experience for guests.

In recent years, Crystal Mountain has further enhanced its offerings. It has become a year-round destination with activities such as mountain biking, hiking, scenic chairlift rides, disc golf, and more. The resort has continually invested in infrastructure and amenities to maintain its status as a top-tier recreational retreat.

Today, Crystal Mountain remains a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, families, and vacationers looking for both winter and summer activities. It continues to be a cherished part of Michigan's recreational landscape, providing a wide range of experiences and adventures for visitors of all ages.
