History
Crystal Falls is a small city located in Iron County, Michigan. The city's history is closely tied to the mining industry that flourished in the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Here's an overview of the history of Crystal Falls:
- Early Settlement: The area around Crystal Falls was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Ojibwa (Chippewa) and Menominee. European settlers began to arrive in the mid-19th century, attracted by the region's vast mineral resources.
- Iron Mining Boom: The discovery of iron ore deposits in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the late 19th century triggered a mining boom, and Crystal Falls became a significant mining center. In 1880, the first iron mine was established near Crystal Falls, leading to the rapid growth of the town.
- Development of the City: As mining operations expanded, Crystal Falls transformed from a small settlement to a bustling city. The community was incorporated as a village in 1887 and then as a city in 1889. The population swelled, and various businesses, schools, churches, and other infrastructure were established.
- Iron Ore Extraction: The mining operations in Crystal Falls primarily focused on extracting high-quality iron ore. Several mining companies, such as the Crystal Falls Iron Company, the Lake Superior Iron Company, and the Oliver Iron Mining Company, played a crucial role in the region's mining industry.
