History

The Daniel W. Hoan Memorial Bridge, also known as the Hoan Bridge, is a prominent landmark in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. The bridge spans the Milwaukee River and connects the city's downtown area with the Bay View neighborhood, carrying Interstate 794 over the waterway. Here is a brief history of the bridge:

  • Planning and Construction: The idea for a bridge connecting downtown Milwaukee with the south side of the city dates back to the early 20th century. Planning for the Hoan Bridge began in the late 1960s, and construction started in 1970. The bridge was designed by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and built by the Lunda Construction Company.
  • Opening and Dedication: The Hoan Bridge officially opened to traffic on December 16, 1977. It was named in honor of Daniel Webster Hoan, who served as the mayor of Milwaukee from 1916 to 1940. Hoan was a progressive leader known for his efforts to improve social and economic conditions in the city during his tenure.
