The area that is now Panama City Beach was originally inhabited by the Creek and Seminole Native American tribes. In the early 1900s, the St. Andrews Bay Land Company purchased the land that is now Panama City Beach with the intention of developing a resort community. They built the Panama City Beach Hotel, which opened in 1927 and became a popular destination for wealthy tourists.
