History & Context

History The McHenry area in Garrett County, Maryland, has a rich history that is closely tied to the development of Deep Creek Lake. McHenry is a small community located near the western border of Maryland, known for its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The history of McHenry begins with the construction of the Deep Creek Hydroelectric Dam in the early 1920s. The Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Company built the dam to generate power for the growing industrial areas of Western Maryland and nearby Pittsburgh. The dam created Deep Creek Lake, which quickly became a popular destination for fishing, boating, and outdoor recreation. As the popularity of Deep Creek Lake increased, so did the development of the surrounding area. McHenry, named after John McHenry, one of the early settlers in the region, became a hub for tourism and vacation homes. The construction of hotels, restaurants, and other amenities followed, catering to the influx of visitors to the lake.
