History
Port Aransas is a city located on Mustang Island in Nueces County, Texas, United States. The city has a rich and colorful history that dates back to the early 1800s.
The area where Port Aransas is located was originally inhabited by the Karankawa Native American tribe. In the early 1800s, Spanish explorers and settlers began to arrive in the area, and by the mid-1800s, the first permanent settlers had established a fishing village on the island.
In 1910, a channel was dredged through the shallow waters of Corpus Christi Bay, connecting the Gulf of Mexico to the Port Aransas area. This allowed for easier access to the island and the development of the town as a major shipping port for goods such as cotton, wool, and cattle.
During World War II, Port Aransas was used as a training base for Navy pilots, and the island was closed to the public. After the war, the island was reopened, and the population grew rapidly. The construction of the first paved road to the island in the 1950s made it easier for tourists to visit.
