Downtown Evansville Live Cam

The most vibrant urban district in the region

History

Downtown Evansville is the central business district of Evansville, Indiana, located on the Ohio River. The city was founded in 1812 and downtown Evansville has played a significant role in the city's development.

During the 19th century, downtown Evansville was a thriving commercial center, with a busy riverfront that served as a hub for steamboat traffic. The city's location at the confluence of the Ohio and Wabash Rivers made it an important transportation and shipping center, and many industries, including flour mills, breweries, and distilleries, were established in the area.

In the early 20th century, downtown Evansville continued to grow and prosper, with the construction of many notable buildings, including the Old National Bank Building, the McCurdy Hotel, and the Victory Theatre. The area also became known for its vibrant entertainment scene, with many theaters, vaudeville houses, and music venues.

However, in the mid-20th century, downtown Evansville began to decline as businesses and residents moved to the suburbs. The construction of the Lloyd Expressway, which bypassed downtown, further isolated the area and led to a decline in economic activity.
