The Historical Origins
In the heart of Madison, Connecticut, the E.C. Scranton Memorial Library stands as a testament to both architectural beauty and community dedication. Originally founded in the late 19th century, the library’s history is rich with local and cultural significance. Edward Carrington Scranton, a prominent Madison philanthropist, was instrumental in its creation. In honor of his mother, Sarah Lane Scranton, he funded the establishment of the library with the aim of enriching the lives of Madison residents through literacy and access to knowledge. This library has since become an integral part of the town, embodying a blend of history, architecture, and the spirit of community engagement.
The E.C. Scranton Memorial Library opened its doors to the public in 1901. Architecturally designed in the Colonial Revival style, it captures the classical symmetry and decorative details that were popular in New England architecture of the time. As it grew, the library expanded its resources and services, eventually undergoing several renovations to keep pace with modern needs. Yet despite these updates, it has preserved its historic charm. Today, the library remains one of Madison's most cherished landmarks, drawing both residents and tourists who appreciate its historical and architectural importance.
