History

Elkader is a city located in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. It holds significant historical importance as it was named after Abd el-Kader, an Algerian Muslim leader who fought against French colonialism in the mid-19th century. The city was founded in 1846 and is one of the few places in the United States named after an Arab.

The settlement of Elkader began with a group of pioneers led by Timothy Davis and John Thompson. They purchased land along the Turkey River and established the town, naming it in honor of Abd el-Kader. The choice of name was intended to show support for the struggle of the Algerian leader against French oppression.
