Emeryville History

Emeryville is a city in Alameda County, California, United States, located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. Emeryville has a rich and varied history that dates back to the pre-colonial era.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the Ohlone tribe inhabited the Emeryville area. The Ohlone people lived in small villages throughout the East Bay and were skilled hunters and gatherers.

In the mid-19th century, Emeryville was known as "Shellmound" because of the large shell mounds left behind by the Ohlone people. These shell mounds were eventually destroyed by European settlers, who used the shells for construction materials.

In 1854, a settlement was established in the area by Joseph Stickney Emery, a landowner from Maine. Emeryville was incorporated as a city in 1896, and by the early 20th century, it had become a thriving industrial center, with a large number of factories, warehouses, and rail yards.
