European settlers began to arrive in the late 18th century, with the founding of Fort Steuben in 1812 by Hugh McGary Jr. The fort was later renamed Fort Harrison after the death of General William Henry Harrison, who served there during the War of 1812. Growth and Incorporation:Evansville experienced significant growth during the early 19th century due to its strategic location on the Ohio River. The city's riverfront location facilitated trade and transportation, leading to the establishment of businesses and industries.
