The city itself is situated on the shores of East Okoboji Lake, one of the Iowa Great Lakes. Here is a brief overview of the history of Spirit Lake: Native American Presence: The Spirit Lake area has a rich Native American history. The Dakota Sioux tribe, particularly the Wahpekute band, inhabited the region for centuries. The lake itself was named "Minnewaukon" by the Dakota Sioux, meaning "Spirit Water." The Native American presence in the area predates the arrival of European settlers. European Settlement: The first European settlers arrived in the Spirit Lake area in the mid-19th century. In 1856, pioneers led by Captain William Williams established the first permanent settlement near the lake, known as Pioneer Village. The settlement grew steadily, attracting more settlers to the area.
