History
Bemidji is a city in north-central Minnesota and is the county seat of Beltrami County. The area where Bemidji now stands has a long history of human habitation, dating back thousands of years. The Ojibwe people, also known as the Chippewa, were the primary inhabitants of the area when Europeans first arrived in the 18th century.
In the late 19th century, the logging industry became the dominant economic activity in the region. The Mississippi River, which runs through Bemidji, was used to transport logs to sawmills downstream. In 1898, the first sawmill was built in Bemidji, and the city soon became a major logging center.
