History & Context
Saint Petersburg History Saint Petersburg is a city in northwestern Russia located on the delta of the Neva River and the Gulf of Finland. It was founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and served as the capital of the Russian Empire for over two centuries until the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. Peter the Great wanted a modern, western-style city to serve as the new capital of Russia, and he selected the swampy delta of the Neva River as the location for this new city. The construction of the city was an enormous undertaking, and many workers died from the harsh conditions during its early years. Saint Petersburg quickly became a center of culture, education, and political power in Russia. The city was home to many important writers, artists, and thinkers, including Fyodor Dostoevsky, Vladimir Nabokov, and Ivan Turgenev. The State Hermitage Museum, located in the heart of the city, is one of the largest and most famous art museums in the world.
