Frederick History

Frederick is a historic city located in the state of Maryland in the United States. It was founded in 1745 by German immigrants and was named after Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore, the last proprietor of the Maryland colony.

During the American Revolutionary War, Frederick served as a military center and was home to many important figures such as Thomas Johnson, the first governor of Maryland, and Francis Scott Key, who wrote the Star-Spangled Banner. In fact, Key wrote the famous anthem while watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore during the War of 1812.

Frederick played a significant role in the Civil War as well. It was a key location during the Maryland Campaign of 1862 and the Battle of Monocacy in 1864, where Union forces tried to delay Confederate General Jubal Early's advance on Washington, D.C. Today, the city has several historic sites related to the Civil War, including the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
