Gaithersburg is a city located in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The city has a rich and interesting history that dates back to the early 18th century when it was first settled by European immigrants.

The land on which the city now sits was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Piscataway and Seneca peoples. In the early 1700s, European settlers began to arrive in the area, and the town of Gaithersburg was founded in 1765 by Benjamin Gaither.

During the Civil War, Gaithersburg served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, providing a safe haven for runaway slaves seeking freedom. The town also played a significant role in the development of the B&O Railroad, with the first train passing through in 1873.
