History & Context

History Harbor Springs has a rich history that dates back centuries. The region was originally inhabited by the Odawa (or Ottawa) Native American tribe, who called the area "Waganakisi," meaning "place of the crooked water." The Odawa people relied on the abundant natural resources of the region, including fish from the bay and surrounding lakes, as well as game from the dense forests. European exploration of the area began in the 17th century when French traders and missionaries arrived in the Great Lakes region. They established relationships with the Native American tribes, including the Odawa people. The French presence in the area continued until the mid-18th century when the British took control of the region after the French and Indian War.
