History & Context

History The Little River is a waterway located in the northeastern part of South Carolina. It stretches for approximately 67 miles, flowing through Horry and Georgetown counties before eventually emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near the town of Little River. The history of the Little River dates back thousands of years to the indigenous tribes that inhabited the region. The Waccamaw and Winyah tribes were among the Native American groups that relied on the river for sustenance and transportation. European exploration and settlement in the area began in the 16th century when Spanish explorers arrived along the coast. Over time, English, French, and Scottish settlers established plantations and farms near the river, taking advantage of its fertile lands and access to water transportation. During the American Revolution, the Little River region played a role in the fight for independence. The river served as a strategic transportation route for both British and Patriot forces, and skirmishes and conflicts occurred in the area.
