History

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, also known as ATL, is located in Atlanta, Georgia, and is the world's busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic and aircraft operations. The airport has a long and fascinating history dating back to the early 1900s.

In 1909, the city of Atlanta purchased an abandoned racetrack in the city's southeast corner, which would eventually become the site of the airport. The racetrack was transformed into an airfield, and in 1925, it was named Candler Field after former Atlanta mayor Asa Candler.

In 1941, Mayor William Hartsfield spearheaded a campaign to build a new airport for Atlanta. The city acquired land near the small community of Hapeville, just south of Atlanta, and construction of the new airport began. The new airport, named Atlanta Municipal Airport, opened in 1948 and replaced Candler Field as Atlanta's primary airport.
