Pompano Beach History

Pompano Beach is a city located in Broward County, Florida, United States. It is named after the pompano fish, which is commonly found in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida. The city was originally inhabited by the Tequesta Indians, who were the native inhabitants of South Florida.

The first European to explore the area was Juan Ponce de León, who landed nearby in 1513. However, it was not until the late 1800s that the area was settled by pioneers. The first permanent resident of Pompano Beach was Frank Sheene, who arrived in 1896 and established a tomato farm. By the early 1900s, more settlers had arrived, and the town began to grow.

In the 1920s, Pompano Beach experienced a boom in real estate and tourism. The city's first hotel, the Pompano Hotel, was built in 1926, and the city began to attract wealthy visitors from the Northeast. During this time, the city also became a popular destination for sport fishing, with the Atlantic Ocean just offshore.

In the 1950s, Pompano Beach became a center for the aircraft industry. The Goodyear Blimp was based in Pompano Beach from 1955 to 1978, and many other aviation companies established operations in the area. This led to a period of rapid growth and development for the city.
