History

Sorrento is a coastal town located in the Campania region of Italy, about 50 kilometers south of Naples. It has a rich history dating back to ancient times and has been inhabited by various civilizations over the centuries.

The town was originally founded by the Greeks in the 7th century BC and was known as 'Sirenuse', which means 'Land of the Sirens'. The Greeks were followed by the Romans, who established Sorrento as a popular resort town. It was during the Roman period that Sorrento became known for its beautiful villas and gardens, many of which can still be seen today.
