Riva degli Schiavoni History
Riva degli Schiavoni is a promenade located in Venice, Italy, along the waterfront of the Bacino di San Marco, near the Doge's Palace. It has a long and rich history, dating back to the 9th century when it was used as a landing place for the ships of the Venetian fleet.
The promenade was originally named Riva degli Schiavoni, which means "the quay of the Slavs," after the numerous Slavic slaves who were brought to Venice and used as laborers in the construction of the city. In the 12th century, the promenade became an important trading center for merchants from all over Europe and the Mediterranean.
