History
Hutchinson Square is a historic park located in the heart of Summerville, South Carolina, USA. The square has played a significant role in the history of Summerville and has been a focal point for community gatherings, events, and celebrations for many years.
Summerville itself was established in the late 19th century as a summer retreat for Charleston residents seeking relief from the sweltering heat and diseases associated with the low-lying coastal areas. The town quickly grew in popularity due to its pleasant climate and the supposed healing properties of its pine-scented air. As a result, many grand hotels, cottages, and homes were built in Summerville during this period.
Hutchinson Square, originally known as "Public Square," was established in the center of the town and served as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike. It was named after Colonel Lawrence M. Hutchinson, a prominent local resident and landowner. The square's layout and design reflect the influence of the Victorian-era park movement, with walking paths, landscaped gardens, and benches for relaxation.
