History

The intersection of Interstate 90 (I-90) and Riverside Boulevard in Rockford, Illinois, holds a significant place in the evolution of transportation and infrastructure in the Midwest. Rockford, the largest city in Winnebago County, has long been a strategic crossroads in northern Illinois due to its location near major waterways, railroads, and highways. The development of I-90, also known as the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway in this region, transformed the city's connectivity to Chicago, Madison, and other economic hubs, enhancing its regional importance.

I-90 was first constructed in the 1950s as part of the Interstate Highway System, a federal project initiated by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956. This nationwide effort aimed to improve mobility and support the burgeoning post-war economy. As part of this initiative, I-90 was designed to connect key metropolitan areas across the northern United States, stretching from Boston, Massachusetts, to Seattle, Washington. The section running through northern Illinois and crossing Riverside Boulevard became a crucial link between Chicago and the Upper Midwest.
