Little Traverse Bay History Little Traverse Bay is a natural harbor on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The area has a rich history dating back thousands of years when Native American tribes, including the Odawa and Ojibwe, lived along the shores and fished in the waters. In the 1600s, French explorers arrived in the area and established trading relationships with the local tribes. In 1701, French fur trader Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac established Fort Pontchartrain du DΓ©troit at the southern end of Lake Huron, which helped to solidify French control over the Great Lakes region, including Little Traverse Bay.
