International Drive History
International Drive, commonly known as I-Drive, is a major tourist district in Orlando, Florida. It is situated southwest of downtown Orlando, and is approximately 11 miles long. I-Drive is known for its various attractions, entertainment venues, hotels, and restaurants, which draw millions of visitors every year.
The history of International Drive dates back to the 1960s, when the area was largely undeveloped. The Walt Disney World Resort opened in 1971, and this helped to put Orlando on the map as a tourist destination. As more visitors came to the area, the need for additional lodging, dining, and entertainment options became apparent.
In the 1970s, I-Drive began to take shape as a tourist destination. The first hotel to be built on the strip was the International Inn, which opened in 1970. Other hotels soon followed, including the Hilton and the Marriott. The area also became home to various tourist attractions, such as Wet 'n Wild, a water park that opened in 1977.
