El Gouna's history dates back to the 1980s when an Egyptian entrepreneur named Samih Sawiris envisioned creating a unique and upscale destination on the Red Sea coast. Sawiris, who is also the founder of Orascom Development Holding, sought to build a self-sustained town that would blend natural beauty with modern infrastructure and luxury accommodations.

Construction of El Gouna began in 1989, and the development was carefully planned to include high-end hotels, residential areas, golf courses, marinas, restaurants, shops, and recreational facilities. The town's architecture and design took inspiration from various influences, including Egyptian, Nubian, and Arabian styles. El Gouna was also designed with environmental sustainability in mind, incorporating elements to preserve the natural ecosystem of the area.
