Geological and Hydrological Context of the Kurschattenbrunnen

The Kurschattenbrunnen fountain in Bad Wildungen is more than a decorative spa feature; it is intricately connected to the region’s unique hydrogeology. Nestled on the southern slope of the Kellerwald anticline, the fountain taps into thermal-medicinal springs that originate in Middle Devonian sandstones some 800 meters below surface. Rainwater infiltrates the permeable strata, percolating through fissures in the Germanic Triassic Muschelkalk and Zechstein layers, where geothermal gradients elevate temperatures to 20–22°C. The ascending mineral-rich water—laden with bicarbonate, calcium, and magnesium ions—emerges at the Kurschattenbrunnen, delivering therapeutic benefits characteristic of Bad Wildungen’s salt-sulphur spa tradition.
