In the 9th century, a monastery was founded in the area, which brought new settlers to the region. Over the next few centuries, the town developed into a hub for trade and agriculture. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the town experienced a period of religious turmoil during the Reformation, as it was located on the border between Protestant and Catholic territories. The town eventually became Lutheran, and in 1665, a new church was built in the town center.
