The area around Lake Tahoe has a rich history dating back thousands of years when it was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Washoe people. In the mid-19th century, European-American settlers began to arrive in the region. The discovery of gold in California in 1848 triggered the California Gold Rush, and soon prospectors were venturing into the Sierra Nevada Mountains, including the Lake Tahoe area, in search of their fortunes. The development of wagon roads and trails through the region helped facilitate this influx of settlers.
