A historic community in northwest Ohio

History

Danbury Township is located in Ottawa County, Ohio, in the United States. It is situated on the Marblehead Peninsula, bordered by Lake Erie to the north and east. The township has a rich history that dates back to its early settlement and plays a significant role in the region's development.

The area that is now Danbury Township was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Ottawa and Wyandot peoples. European settlers began arriving in the late 18th century, drawn to the area's abundant natural resources and fertile land. One of the earliest settlers was Zalmon Rice, who arrived in 1807 and established a trading post along the lakeshore.

In 1820, Danbury Township was officially established, named after Danbury, Connecticut. The township quickly grew as more settlers arrived, primarily engaged in farming and fishing. The development of the area was accelerated with the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 and the completion of the railroad in the mid-19th century. These transportation routes facilitated trade and brought new opportunities for economic growth.
